Niagara falls 27.-28.4

We went to see them four times.

Yes, you’ve read that right. Four times. And it was absolutely worth it every single time!

But let’s start at the beginning. First, we drove near the falls on the Canadian side for some walks in the Niagara Glen Nature Reserve. The atmosphere in the Carolinian Forest was truly exceptional. I’ve never seen a similar place. Kind of mystical and fairytale-like. But see for yourself:

This is a natural “whirlpool”. For some reason the water flows into the little pool on the left, stays there for a couple of seconds and suddenly changes direction and flows back into the river. A very unique natural phenomenon I suppose. 🤷
Can you guess what you can do here in summer? Hint: white spots… 🧗
Possibly a red cardinal?
Eagle 🦅?? Or hawk?

Falls part I

The same evening we decided to stroll to the falls. The weather wasn’t too good but we wanted to get a first impression of the falls and check out the best spots for taking pictures. The forecast for the following day was excellent and we wanted decent pictures. 😁

American falls
Horseshoe falls

You’ve seen pictures and watched videos and you know that the Niagara falls are famous for their dimensions and their splendour. You know what to expect. And yet, when you’re standing in front of them you can’t help being totally overwhelmed by the beauty and the magnificence of these extraordinary falls. Awe-inspiring what mother nature has to offer!

It was really, really cold. It even snowed every now and then. 🌨

Little fun fact: the first person ever to survive going down the falls in a barrel was a 63-year-old school teacher named Annie Edson Taylor. 😂 Those teachers…

In search of warmth and food we walked along the main street and were quite surprised of what awaitrd us there: a theme park right in the middle of the town! 😂

Falls part II

At night there’s a light show and the falls are being illuminated in various colours. It was one of the most fascinating things I’ve ever seen. But see for yourself: (small selection out of probably 60 or so photos that we’ve taken)

Next we crossed the border and had a look at the falls from the American side.

Toronto 24.4-27.4

Ok, I’ll spill the beans right away: We totally loved Toronto!😍 It’s cosmopolitan and rather large-sized with lots of colossal skyscrapers but yet lovely, kind of walkable and has a lot to offer.

For example: Lots and lots of street art …

… There’s a harbor you can walk along…

… as well as massive skyscrapers and a 553 m high communications and observation tower.

Running day! Rented city bikes and headed towards the ferry which took us to the ‘Toronto Islands’ for a 16 km run. 🏃 Killed two birds with one stone: saw the whole island while having some exercise and enjoying the amazing skyline! ☀️🤩

This, my folks, is not the sea! It’s Lake Ontario which is the world’s 14th largest lake (merely 40 times bigger than Lake Constance….😅)
Look what we’ve got here! 😂
🤭

A superb example of city development: the area around the old distillery was turned into a modern spot for shopping (small, owner-operated shops), dining, theatre performances etc. Well done! 👍
